The Passion and Journey to Helping Animals

A woman bends down to kiss her playful puppy in a sunny outdoor field.

My passion for helping animals stems from years of hands-on experience and dedicated research. I’ve worked with various pets, attended numerous conferences, explored literature, enjoyed podcasts, spoken with pet owners, and learned from videos. This dedication to learning grows daily, and I am eager to share everything I discover. My insights come from personal experiences and the wisdom of various holistic veterinarians. Attending the Animals and Essential Oils Conference in Utah illuminated the key components critical to achieving optimal health and longevity for our pets.

During my research, I’ve also been amazed to discover how closely our pets’ health and physiology relate to our own. While learning how to help pets, I’m also uncovering keys to my own health and longevity.

Proactive Wellness Education

  • Physical Component of Well-Being:
Regular exercise is vital for both pets and humans. A 2019 Harvard study involving over 100,000 participants found that jogging for just 15 minutes per day can protect against depression. It is important however to understand that exercise should be geared towards a dog’s age, physical condition and needs. Exercise can calm pets, reduce restlessness, improve sleep, and enhance social interactions.

Empowering Dogs:

Are we giving our dogs the opportunity to make decisions? Letting dogs choose their path during walks—whether to go left or right—draws from insights by Alexandra Horowitz from Columbia University, as shared in her podcast and book “Inside of a Dog.” Allowing dogs to enjoy the freedom to sniff and explore builds respect for their choices, improving their confidence, life quality, and the human-animal relationship.

  • Mental Stimulation:
Nose work is particularly beneficial for dogs that are reactive or traumatized, providing enriching mental engagement. All dogs have an innate desire to sniff and engage with their environment. Both mental and physical stimulation can help prevent premature aging in stressed dogs.

Conclusion

Achieving optimal health and longevity for our pets involves a combination of physical and mental wellness. Encouraging exercise, respecting their autonomy, and providing mental challenges not only enhance their lives but also ours.
